How Long Does an Automotive Suspension Shock Last?

One of the frequent questions we get asked, or have to explain.

Automotive shocks typically last 50,000–100,000 miles, but this can vary depending on driving conditions and the vehicle's make and model.

For example, shocks may wear out faster if you drive aggressively or on rough roads. Some say that shocks can last up to 10 years if you drive carefully on smooth roads in the city, but only about 5 years if you drive on dirt roads or hit potholes. Shocks deteriorate slowly over time due to wear and tear from the metal, rubber, and plastic components, as well as extreme heat and adverse weather conditions.

Some signs that your shocks may need replacing include:

  • Nose diving when braking
  • Bouncy ride Vehicle swaying or rolling when cornering
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Rear squat when accelerating
  • Steering wheel vibration
  • Unusual noises Leaking fluid on the exterior of the shocks

When buying new shocks, you can consider the build quality and opt for materials like steel or aluminum, which are more resistant to corrosion and wear.

It's also recommended to replace both shocks and struts at the same time to ensure optimal stability and ride comfort.
